Treating problematic skin is no easy feat. Whether it’s acne or psoriasis, the daily battle of living with troubled skin can take a toll on one’s confidence. These days, there’s a wide range of options that one can try to treat problematic skin. While some have found success with conventional over the counter skin care products and prescription creams and pills, the quest for clear and healthy skin for others can be a long and frustrating one.
CBD has numerous benefits for the skin.
CBD has been known to exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties. This is why it is not surprising to know that it may actually possess skin-healing benefits. Furthermore, hemp seed oil contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which provide moisture and protection for the skin from sun damage.
The human body’s endocannabinoid system is made up of numerous cannabinoid receptors, and a large portion of which are found in the skin. CBD molecules in cannabis interact with this system to encourage homeostasis and create the said positive effects.
CBD is a powerful antioxidant. In fact, some even believe that it is more potent than vitamins A, C, and E in terms of combating premature lines and wrinkles.
The powerful antioxidant benefits of cannabidiol can help protect the skin from free radicals such as UV rays, smoke, and other environmental pollutants, which is essential in having younger looking skin.
CBD has been known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties, which can be potentially useful as a topical agent to help reduce acne breakouts and other skin irritations.
CBD skin care products are applied directly on troubled areas so that the CBD oil can work directly where it is needed the most. With CBD topical products, the healing compounds are absorbed almost immediately by the skin and allow them to target the affected area for a much faster and focused effect.
Numerous studies have shown the potential of cannabis in revolutionizing the skin care industry. Even if this treatment option is still at its infancy, there are already several success stories from those who have been using cannabis for skin care problems.
In 2015, Casey Scalf developed a bad case of contact dermatitis on his face in reaction to tea tree oil. The rash persisted for two weeks before he decided to seek the help of a dermatologist, who prescribed him a steroid and an anti-fungal cream to treat the skin irritation. The prescription drugs brought relief, but much to his surprise, the rash proved persistent and returned much worse over the weeks.
Scaff went back to the dermatologist, who then prescribed him an anti-seborrheic cream. His doctor also advised him to stop his initial medications as continuing the steroid and anti-fungal cream could cause his skin to scar. Frightened with the news, Scalf decided to conduct research on the anti-seborrheic cream he had been prescribed, only to find out that it was only meant to suppress his symptoms and not cure his skin condition.
Upon further research, Scalf stumbled upon the benefits of CBD on the skin and eventually decided to give it a try. He acquired an activated, pure CBD oil, and proceeded to mix it with organic coconut oil on a 1:1 ratio. He carefully applied it directly on the affected areas of his face while avoiding his eye area until his skin was able to absorb the oil mixture.
He continued the treatment for a week, while diligently documenting the daily progress. Much to his surprise, his dermatitis was completely gone as early as day 7.
Nine months after Scalf’s CBD skin experiment, he published his findings September of 2015. Fast forward to a year later, he provided an update on his skin condition.
“Since that seventh day it’s been clear skies ever since. I’ve had no remission or relapse; it hasn’t come back.”Casey Scalf
He was in awe at the realization that it’s been a year since his grueling battle with dermatitis has ended. Unlike the prescription medications he used, which merely masked his symptoms, the CBD was “pretty clear-cut”.
Scalf believes that his concoction could be tried to treat other skin care conditions such as acne or eczema, but he hasn’t heard of anyone else giving his experiment a try, so its efficacy for other skin problems has yet to be confirmed. But with all that said, there is now an abundance of studies available on the subject, so it surely won’t be long enough to see all the benefits of cannabis and hemp seed oil on the skin.

The potential of CBD in treating contact dermatitis has been exemplified in Scalf’s case, but it is just the beginning. Numerous studies have shown potential benefits of cannabinoids in the treatment of psoriasis, acne, and eczema due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
With the prevalence of skin problems and diseases these days, it just makes sense that a natural and effective treatment should not be just an option, but a necessity for the huge subset of the population.
The American Academy of Dermatology reports that 50 million Americans are affected by acne annually. Although the majority of acne sufferers are under the age of 24, approximately 15% of those afflicted are adults. Furthermore, the reported cost of treating acne are said to collectively surpass $3 billion.
Combining those statistics with the estimated 7.5 million Americans who have psoriasis, 28 million who have atopic dermatitis, and the billion dollar skin care industry, it only goes to show that skin care treatments is a much sought after market.
With the over saturation of topical and oral skin care medications in the market, it’s quite surprising that only few can find relief in these products. Contrary to most of what these products claim, there has been no single guaranteed solution to treat the skin. However, as more and more studies and stories on the efficacy of cannabis continue to emerge, therefore it won’t be long before the development of a new, unprecedented skin care program hits the market. From creams, balms, and oils infused with CBD oils to CBD oil tinctures, cannabis skin care is definitely the next big skin care regime to anticipate!
